While the new Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Regulations for digital accessibility provide guidance to state and local governments, there are five exceptions to the rule that are relevant to higher education. Participants will learn how to apply these exceptions effectively to current digital assets which enables a focus only on items that require remediation.

Accessible Course Materials 101

In anticipation of coming changes on April 26, 2026, this hands-on workshop introduces Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its implications for course design. 

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of accessibility requirements and explore campus-supported tools, such as Ally and the Canvas Course Template, that help create inclusive learning environments. The session includes guided work time for faculty to begin applying these tools with facilitator support. 

This is the first in a series of workshops designed to empower faculty as they develop accessible course materials; register for the workshop.

While automated tools help identify accessibility concerns, manual testing is a human-driven evaluation of accessibility barriers that automation cannot detect. Join the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to explore keyboard navigation, screen readers, color contrast, headings, links, tables, and multimedia elements, using built-in accessibility tools and other methods to ensure accessibility. 

Presented and sponsored by OIT, in collaboration with the Office of Equal Opportunity, Compliance, and Conflict Management (EOCCM).

This training provides a basic overview on how to create accessible Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and PDF Documents. Specific “how to” instructions will be provided on how to ensure these file types are created in an accessible format from the beginning. Instructions will also be provided on how to check for, and fix, the accessibility of an existing document. By addressing each type of file, attendees will learn how to leverage the built-in accessibility tools to generate a document that passes the Accessibility Checker, meets compliance requirements, and follows best practices for individuals with disabilities.
